Jennifer Fluhr, BSN RN, Health Coach graduated with her Bachelors of Science in nursing from the University of Indianapolis’s School of Nursing in 2013 with Magna Cum Laude honors. After nursing school, she gained experience with a variety of patient populations, first working in a skilled rehab facility with geriatrics, and then as a school nurse with kindergarten and first grade students.
These nursing experiences gave Jennifer a new perspective in health and wellness. In the geriatric population, she was able to see, understand, and treat the consequences of a lifetime of poor health choices. As a school nurse, she was able to see the opposite end, where the story begins. These experiences impacted her in a profound way. She began to search for ways to prevent chronic illness and disease through lifestyle changes. Through this search, she changed her own personal health and well-being, and a passion for functional medicine was born.
Through this journey, she has overcome over a decade of personal obesity, poor nutrition, and a sedentary lifestyle. She will use her own personal experience and success, as well as her education through Wellcoaches, to help patients succeed in their own journeys to health and wellness. Whether she is working with weight loss patients through our Jumpstart Paleo program, or as health coach for clients with other goals like reducing stress, she will help clients build and achieve a vision of success.
Jennifer enjoys spending her free time with her husband, Zach, and their three children, Alaina, Kaelyn, and Lucas. She and her husband are high school sweethearts, and recently celebrated their 13th anniversary. When not busy caring for her family, Jennifer enjoys hot yoga and reading.
Marissa Birky is a senior at IUPUI majoring in Health Services Management through the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, and will be graduating in December of 2017. She began at Indy Wellness as an intern in June 2016, and became part of the team during the Fall.
Marissa was first interested in the internship opportunity at Indy Wellness because it is a holistic practice, which is the area she wanted to be working in post-graduation. After her experiences with family members as nurses in traditional healthcare offices, she became even more interested in functional medicine and turning a “sick-care” society into an actual healthcare society through the use of preventative medicine and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. Through her work here at Indy Wellness, she has learned a lot about functional medicine and how it can benefit each and every patient. Marissa is instrumental in maintaining smooth operations at the office and is available to schedule appointments, take messages, and assist with ordering supplements for our patients. In her free time, she can be found enjoying the outdoors through hiking, cooking, and crafting.
